Chronology of cameras Zeiss Ikon
Simplex is a name used several times by Zeiss Ikon for cameras of very different types. It is inherited from Ernemann brand. It is here applied to entry level plate cameras.
The first copies, in 1927, show a search for optimisation in manufacturing. The body is made of wood, and the folding baseboard is made of metal. The two are not connected by conventional struts, but by the mean of two folds on the baseboard on which there is a dowel that slides into a groove inside the wooden body.
Zeiss Ikon returns fairly quickly to real struts, most probably more reliable.
The optimisation also affects the carriage supporting the lens-shutter unit. The U and the plate behind the shutter become one thanks to stamping. The brand logo is marked in the metal sheet in the available area under the lens. This surface is slightly wavy, but it is difficult to say that this improves the rigidity of the part.
The lenses and shutters that equip these cameras are all low-end, which allowed Zeiss Ikon to offer these Simplex cameras at a lower price than that of a Kodak box of the same format.
The Simplex cameras are available in 6.5 x 9 (195) and 9 x 12 cm (11/7). The one shown here has a Simplex shutter and a 9/14 cm Frontar lens. Focusing is done by a small radial lever located in the axis of the lens.
